Site Visit to Terminal-3, IGI Airport, New Delhi

Site visits of the construction site assist students in learning the construction methods and challenges faced during construction on-site and from the experience of the industry professional (site engineers, project managers, etc.). Visiting the construction site and the material testing laboratory gives knowledge about the testing of construction materials and quality control at the site. The prime purpose of site visits is to learn about the different construction practices adopted by the industries and minimize the gap between academics and field/industry. Keeping this viewpoint, a Site Visit to Terminal-3, IGI Airport, New Delhi, was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & Technology, SGT University, on 22 April 2023 under the aegis of Torque Club. Students were highly interested in understanding the importance of material testing before using them in construction. The engineer demonstrated material testing, i.e., consistency, setting time, soundness of 53-grade Ultratech cement as per IS code provision, compressive test and flexural strength of concrete specimens (cube and beam respectively) and tests on bitumen (softening point, viscosity test, ductility test, etc.) in the laboratory. The project head and engineer explained the construction practices followed during the construction of slab/beam, soil nailing, and application of geotextile, geomembrane, and geocell in the retaining wall. The provision of a drainage system in the retaining wall was also discussed. The engineers explained the construction of flexible pavement and its different layers, i.e., subgrade, sub base course, base course, and wearing/surface course, and students asked their queries.
